Pompano Beach's History
From Railway Settlement to Coastal Destination
Originally established in the late 1800s, Pompano Beach has a rich history that has become a staple in the development of South Florida's real estate market and population growth. Pompano Beach has over 118,000 residents within the city limits and is the sixth most populous city in Broward County.
The first documented permanent residents of the Pompano area were George Butler and Frank Sheen and their families, who arrived in 1896 as railway employees. The first train arrived in the small Pompano settlement on February 22, 1896. It is said that Sheen gave the community its name after jotting down on his survey of the area the name of the fish he had for dinner—the Florida pompano. The coming of the railroad led to development farther west from the coast. In 1906, the iconic Hillsboro Lighthouse was completed on the beach, which still stands today as a beacon of the city's maritime heritage.
On July 3, 1908, a new municipality was incorporated: the Town of Pompano. Following the population boom due to World War II, in 1947, the City of Pompano merged with the newly formed municipality on the beach and became the City of Pompano Beach.
The New Pompano Beach
While the city has seen many changes over the years, Pompano Beach is undergoing a drastic and exciting makeover, especially in its Downtown and beachfront areas. A multibillion-dollar building boom has transformed the city into one of South Florida's most desirable destinations. The old Pompano Beach is evolving, and a younger generation, along with affluent retirees and professionals, is taking residence here.
The beachfront has seen incredible changes with the completion of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, a walkable, beachfront dining and shopping destination. The centerpiece is the newly improved Fisher Family Pier, which spans over 900 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and is uniquely shaped like a pompano fish. Several real estate developers have taken notice and are constructing luxury condo buildings along the oceanfront, including the highly anticipated Waldorf Astoria Residences Pompano Beach, Casamar Beach, and Solemar.
