Gulf Stream's History

Gulf Stream's history is owed much to the construction of Florida’s Highway A1A in the early 1900s; the historic beachfront road, built as a more scenic alternative to Route 1 across the Intracoastal waterway on the mainland, enabled cars to drive from Jacksonville to Miami with nearby views of the Atlantic Ocean. More dependable access led to real estate development and Gulf Stream welcomed injection of cash from real estate investors like Henry Phipps, Jr., one of the founders of U.S. Steel in the early 1920's. 

Plots of land used for golf courses and polo fields, like the still-standing Gulf Stream Golf Club, soon joined seasonal residences in the growing community. After incorporating in 1925, the area experienced ups and downs through the Great Depression and World War II, but enjoyed sustained growth beginning in the 1960s with the construction of larger homes and a second golf course. Present-day Gulf Stream retains many of the elegant houses constructed in the 1920s, which pair nicely with the neighborhood’s thriving golf and polo community.
